LIGHT BRAHMA
Brahmas introduced into the USA in the 1850’s and then to England right after started the nationwide love for poultry and became known as "Hen Fever". The original variety was the Light Brahma. In December 1852, to promote his stock, Mr. George Burnham shipped nine of his finest as a gift to Queen Victoria of England. Prices jumped from $12-15 per pair to $100-150. Brahmas have feathers on their shanks and toes, reddish-brown eyes, red earlobes, yellow beaks, smooth plumage with dense down in all sections, and broad, wide head with skull projecting over the eyes – known as “beetle brow.” They can be up to 30” tall. They mature slowly. They come in three color varieties – the Light, the Dark, and the Buff.
These very large dedicated broody hens make it easy to hatch more chicks. They prefer winter months and will lay eggs mostly from Oct to May during the cold season when other hens slow down. They do better in confinement of outdoor runs. Best to be in a dry environment for their feathered feet. Due to their size they may appear scary to small children but they are very docile and non aggressive to other breeds, sometimes they get bullied. Their size and weight makes them unable to fly over low fences easily.
LIVESTOCK CONSERVANCY STATUS: RECOVERING
NOTE: They need ample shade and plenty of water when living in our sourthern environments. They also require more feeding due to their size. They do make a beautiful show exhibit.
